Communication That Respects the Reader
Posters in English, downloaded from an international template, are a small but telling failure. They announce that the programme belongs to someone outside the village. The visual language of the bin station should be in the local script, with icons developed or at least vetted by the children and the cook. Children are unforgiving critics of unclear icons, and their verdict is the one that matters most.
The communication should also acknowledge what the programme cannot do. If there is no downstream buyer for a particular plastic, say so. If a particular waste stream will continue to be burned, say so. Trust is built by the accuracy of what a programme admits it cannot solve, not by the breadth of what it promises.
Agency, Not Charity
The last and most important stakeholder is the broader community — the parents who drop off children, the elders who walk past the school, the small shops nearby whose wrappers blow into the compound. They are not beneficiaries of the programme. They are the environment in which the programme either thrives or suffocates. Treating them as recipients — even grateful ones — converts a stewardship initiative into a charity event, and charity events end when the funding ends.
What works, slowly, is invitation. A short, well-attended community meeting where the audit findings are presented in plain language and where the most uncomfortable questions ("Why should we sort when the truck still mixes everything?") are answered honestly. A quarterly open day at the compost pit, when neighbours can see what the kitchen waste has become. A small but real role for an interested elder or shopkeeper in the monitoring routine, so that the programme has adult champions beyond the school staff.
A Closing Principle for the Road
